Digital Printing with a Matte Finish vs. Gloss Finish – New Technology Adds More Choices

At Quality Imaging Services we like to offer our clients choices when printing digitally. In the past digital presses have been limited to a glossy sheen because of the fusing process and the need for fuser oil. You may have noticed digital prints on a matte or uncoated stock still had a shine to the printed image, or the printed image seemed to sit on top of the paper instead of seamlessly blending with it.

Well, the times have changed and we can now manipulate our digital press into providing even more offset simulating Matte prints.  First, by using an oil-less process and a wax based dry ink we remove the first problem, the oil itself. Second, we can manipulate the actual temperature of the machine’s fusing to give us the result we are looking for. Increase the temperature and gloss is produced, decrease it and matte is produced. Obviosly, there is a little more too it, but we can’t give away all our secrets!!

Giving our customers this choice has paid off. When viewing samples, more and more now choose the matte finish. Some have even said the print quality and feel of the final product rivals previous offset jobs we have done for them. If you have any doubts or would like to see samples blease don’t hesitate to call 212-566-5540 or email us at info@qis-inc.com. Click here for a compelte list of our Digital Print Services.

Our Print Environment – New HVAC Installed

Over the past few weeks we have worked with our HVAC specialist and building management to get a new 20 ton air conditioning system installed in our print  production shop. With spring here and summer just around the corner, maintaining a constant shop environment is extremely important for print quality, machine operation and paper storage. We try and maintain a shop temperature of 68-72 degrees, with a relative humidity around 20-25%. Here are some of the reasons why shop climate is so important:

  • Temperature – our Canon ImagePress 7000VP uses two fusing stations both exceeding 235 degrees. When cool, fresh air can not be provided, the machine can overheat or produce inconsistent results. This is true for our other production machines as well.
  • Humidity – Digital Presses use static electric charges to write images to paper. When there is not enough moisture in the air (humidity) electric charges act sporadically. The quality of the color print can therefore be compromised.  However, to much moisture in the air can wrinkle or ruin paper stocks and make feeding them through the machines harder. So maintaining the sweet spot of 20-25% is crucial to successful print runs.
  • Dust collection and Cleanliness – Our presses bring cool air in with fans, through filters. Keeping the shop clean and the dust levels down helps ensure free airflow though filters and cooling fans.

So with our new air conditioning system in place and a few tricks from our specialist at maintaining humidity, we are off to a great start and should have an excellent and consistent spring and summer. Print with QR Codes For Cross Media Marketing

QR Code Leading to Print Website

Example of a QR Code - Scan it to Go To Our Website

Lately we have been seeing these funny little square bar codes showing up everywhere. These are QR Codes (Quick Response Codes), and they are an amazing way to link printed material with digital content. QR codes are read using a smart phone or cell phone with a camera and the appropriate software. For example, when using Google Android, you can install the Google Goggles app to read the codes. Once read they can automatically link you to a webpage, generate a coupon code, provide contact information, or generate a text message. A simple, and free, online tool for creating QR Codes can be found on KayWa’s Website

At Quality Imaging, we have been incorporating these codes into more and more printed pieces. For example, clients are requesting them on the their business cards, so a simple scan puts contact information into a phones address book. On postcards we have been using Variable QR Codes. Variable codes are useful when you are targeting specific demographics or tastes. The printed code automatically changes based on a customers preference or previous sales history.  For more information on QR codes on printed material give us a call at 212-566-5540 or email us at info@qis-inc.com

Booklet Making (Saddle Stitching) Inline and Offline at Quality Imaging

At Quality Imaging we have invested in both inline (attached to printer) and offline (post printer) booklet making equipment. For those who don’t know, Saddle Stitching is the process of printing imposed pages, 2-up, double sided, on a sheet size double the width of the finished size, then folding and double stapling down the middle. When saddle stitching keep in mind you must have pages in multiples of four, because each sheet will hold two pages per side. If you are missing pages blanks will need to be inserted. For more information on setting up booklets please visit the Color Printing Section of our website.

For those jobs that are quick to set up and do not require bleeds our Canon 8105′s and 7105′s can produce fast black and white booklets with or without Color inserted covers.  Also, our ImagePress 7000VP Color Press can print finished full color booklets on a mix of stocks inline.

For jobs that are printed using bleeds on the interior pages, we use our offline cutting equipment and finishing equipment to stitch and prepare your booklets. Currently we use a Duplo DBM-120S/S with a trimmer to produce Saddle Stiched Booklets. This equipment can also corner staple and fold individual documents.

Our HP z6200 Large Format Printer Has Arrived!

Yesterday we took delivery of our new large format printer, the HP z6200.  This machine is one of the latest HP models and is a workhorse-in-disguise, enabling us to print high quality posters, trial exhibits, banners, and signage quickly and affordably.  It’s also great for color architectural floorplans because of it’s speed – it can print an Arch D (24×36) print is 17 seconds!  No more waiting around for your drawings.  Another key feature is PMS color matching…it can reach about 85% of the Pantone swatches.  It uses eight different HP Vivid Photo Inks – chromatic red, magenta, matte black, photo black, yellow, light cyan, light gray, light magenta.

So we’re excited to add this to our line up.  We’ve already printed some trade show graphics and fine art prints, and we’re looking forward to exploring more of it’s capabilities.

Come check it out!

Both cover and text can be coated (silk or gloss) or uncoated (matte). Covers also look amazing with UV Coating.

Shop Renovation this Weekend!

Finally, after months of putting it off, we are doing a bit of shop renovation this weekend. The store front fabricators are delivering our new entrance today, it’s all glass with a nice view into the shop and a lot of great advertising space. For those who have visited us down the stairs at 225 Broadway, you will now enter through the left, at the end of the hall.

Print Shop Renovation

Making a Mess!!

This renovation is the first of many as we prepare to introduce new digital print equipment. We are currently evaluating the new Xerox Color 800/1000, the Konica Minolta c8000, the Canon ImagePress 7010VP, and my personal favorite the Kodak Nexpress (a class above all the rest).
